Students, Others Excavate at Ancient Mount Zion Dig Site in Jerusalem

This summer’s excavation at the Mount Zion dig site in the city of Jerusalem has offered 18 UNC Charlotte students, as well as faculty and staff, a rare opportunity to conduct research at an ancient site with religious and historical significance.

German Scholarships Support 30 Students’ Studies Abroad

30 German majors from UNC Charlotte are studying in Germany this summer and in the 2013-14 academic year. Each student received a $2,000 scholarship to undertake immersive language study in a German-speaking country at one of the locations of the prestigious Goethe Institute. Kurt Waldthausen, founder and president of the GLCF, presented the scholarships.

Geography Student Earns Sustainability Award for Focus On Cycling Options

UNC Charlotte’s Ray Atkinson was one of 12 community leaders to win a Community Sustainability Award in April, presented by Sustain Charlotte for his work as president of the cyclists club at UNC Charlotte.

CHARP Hosts Neighborhood Campus Forum

The Charlotte Action Research Project (CHARP) is hosting a Neighborhood Campus Forum on Wednesday May 29 at 5:45 p.m. in Cone University Center 210. Students, faculty and staff are invited. CHARP is a partnership between UNC Charlotte and local Charlotte communities. CHARP’s mission is to match UNC Charlotte students with service learning opportunities through action research in challenged Charlotte neighborhoods and, in the process, develop mutually beneficial partnerships.

Doyle Named Distinguished Visiting Professor at U.S. Air Force Academy

Michael S. Doyle, a professor of Spanish and translation studies at UNC Charlotte, will join the United States Air Force Academy faculty in Colorado Springs, Colo. as a Distinguished Visiting Professor from July 1, 2013 through May 28, 2014.

Researcher Expands Knowledge of What Motivates, Deters Burglars

One way to understand what motivates and deters burglars is to ask them. UNC Charlotte researcher Joseph Kuhns from the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology did just that. He led a research team that gathered survey responses from more than 400 convicted offenders that resulted in an unprecedented look into the minds of burglars, providing insight into intruders’ motivations and methods.

Model United Nations Closes Successful Year

As the 2012-13 academic year comes to a close, the UNC Charlotte Model United Nations team ends the year as its most successful in the team’s history. The team earned 66 awards in the fall and spring, hosted training conferences for area high schools and colleges and attended six conferences.
